To be a great company — one that wins in the market through differentiation and innovation — requires a diverse team that reflects its customers and the communities in which it operates. By thoughtfully creating a people-first culture that incorporates and advances diversity initiatives, organizations enable elasticity of thought, skills, knowledge and perspectives to better understand and serve their customers. Establishing that cultural foundation, however, requires extensive executive buy-in and ongoing support.

TELUS International was recently named a Top Innovator in Diversity and Inclusion in 2017 for the company’s continued strides in hiring a diverse talent, creating a welcoming environment for employees and contributing to society in meaningful ways — none of which would be possible without a senior leadership team that prioritizes diversity initiatives.

As a prime example, Marilyn Tyfting, chief corporate officer for TELUS International, has been instrumental in creating and fostering a culture that encourages our team members to bring their true and complete selves to work. Marilyn also serves as a continued sponsor of Connections – the TELUS Women’s Network, with chapters in the U.S., El Salvador, Guatemala and Manila.

As a result of her extensive workplace contributions, Marilyn has been named one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award Winners for 2017; an honor that proudly acknowledges the country’s leading female executives who have raised their voices, overturned obstacles and paved a path for the next generation.

Q&A with Marilyn Tyfting, CCO, TELUS International

In preparation for her award acceptance, Marilyn shared the following insights on her career and why diversity is important to her both professionally and personally.

What lesson from the early days of your career have you carried forward?

Thoughtfully and purposefully embrace diversity. The multitude of perspectives, skills and knowledge will help ensure you are constantly innovating, improving and growing as a team and an organization.

How do you feel about the word “powerful” being attributed to you and your accomplishments?

What’s truly powerful about the accomplishments I’ve been fortunate to name over the years is that they were realized through collaboration and teamwork with my incredible colleagues. To me, being powerful means to never stop learning from others as well as from your own successes and failures.

What changes in your industry could lead to increased gender equality and diversity at all levels—entry, management and executive?

By creating employment opportunities in developing countries, we are helping create a middle class where women can now help support their families financially and children are able to attend school and focus on getting an education. We provide careers – not simply paychecks – and heavily promote from within to recognize great work regardless of gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

If you could switch places with anyone for a day, who would it be, why and what would you do?

I’d switch places with my daughter to experience life from her 11 year old perspective. I’m curious about how she sees the world – what she’s excited about, what challenges she thinks she’ll face and how she sees herself contributing to making it a better place.

Why should companies aim to be an employer of choice for women?

With women’s economic power surging, ranking right alongside technology as a major factor on marketing and sales, gender diversity is becoming an increasingly important factor in the workplace and specifically in customer-focused organizations. By promoting an inclusive work environment that hires, supports and promotes women, companies will achieve better talent acquisition and retention, increase employee engagement, and have the ability to better relate to a diverse customer base in order to drive exceptional and more personalized brand experiences.
